Ambrose Treacy College values the role sport plays in the development of boys and we give all students access to a sporting team. Participation in team sports helps build a great spirit in the school, educates students in teamwork and sportsmanship, develops skills in various sports, helps create a sense of belonging to the school community, contributes to a fit and healthy lifestyle, and fosters positive attitudes towards sport as a leisure activity. Our diverse program offers the opportunity for every single boy at our school to enjoy sport, recreation and physical activity during their time with us.
Ambrose Treacy College offers sporting programs at various levels – participation, competition and elite. This covers traditional school sports including swimming, cross country, track and field, cricket, rugby union, football, basketball and tennis; as well as a variety of other sports including Australian football, water polo, canoe polo, triathlon, kayaking, canoeing, golf, indoor cricket and indoor soccer. Boys have access to competition at a regional, state and national level and belong to the Met West School Sports association.
At Ambrose Treacy College, we offer sporting opportunities across school, club and community contexts, with our fundamental purpose being to provide opportunity for all of our boys to engage in sport and to find personal excellence and enjoyment in all that they do. By not restricting ourselves to a school-only sport structure, we provide increased and varied opportunities for boys to compete.
Coaching and training times are on weekdays before or after school, or at lunch times, and competition is held Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays, depending on the individual sport structure.
The College is set on beautiful grounds beside the Brisbane River and the sporting facilities include ovals for cricket, rugby, soccer and athletics; a covered 25 metre heated, eight lane swimming pool; two basketball/tennis courts; six cricket practice nets, indoor hall; handball courts for each year group; and shaded play spaces. We also have partnerships with a variety of external venues which allows boys to access high quality training and competition facilities.

Ambrose Treacy College’s cultural program aims to develop self-awareness, self-confidence and inter-personal skills in the students. The program combines classroom programs with co-curricular activities to provide students with a vast range of opportunities, to have fun and develop themselves. We strongly encourage all students to participate in the cultural program of the College. Experienced and talented teachers and tutors guide the boys in developing their creative talents in forming a strong music and performing arts culture in the College community.

The Ambrose Treacy College Instrumental Music Program is an integral part of the school’s co-curriculum. At Ambrose Treacy College the program offers a vast array of musical opportunities for students in the Junior School, and the Middle School. The College currently has the following ensembles:
• ATC Wind Ensemble • Concert Band • Junior Band • Middle School Beginner Band • ATC Big Band • Jazz Ensemble • Flute Ensemble • Clarinet Ensemble • Saxophone Ensemble • Brass Ensemble • Percussion Ensemble 1 & 2
These ensembles include instruments predominantly from the Woodwind, Brass and Percussion families. Most ensembles include students across different year levels and are comprised of students with a similar level of musical experience. In 2015, the current Woodwind, Brass and Percussion instrumental music lessons, were expanded with the introduction of Piano and Guitar lessons at Ambrose Treacy College.
Students have a range of performance opportunities throughout the year including: School Assemblies, the Autumn, Winter and Spring Concerts, Grandparents Day, the Cultural Trail, Orientation Days and the Night of Excellence. Every year ensembles also compete in the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival. Some students who play the piano or guitar have opportunities to participate in ensembles. All piano and guitar students are provided with opportunities to perform as soloists or in small groups at chamber music evenings, assemblies or other school events.

As the voice is our first and most personal instrument, singing is encouraged strongly at Ambrose Treacy College. All Years 4, 5 and 6 Classroom Music students are taught singing through a pedagogically sound Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze based music curriculum. Further to the Classroom Music programme, there are opportunities for students to extend their singing technique and enjoyment through the avenues of Choir and Vocal Ensemble. To cater for the boys’ enthusiasm, a wide range of repertoire is taught in English, as well as through such languages as Latin, French, Japanese, Welsh, Yiddish and Chinese, and through the varying genres of early and sacred music, international folk songs, music theatre and pop. Choralography embellishes much of the repertoire. The groups represent their College at many events, such as all College Masses and Liturgies, School Concerts, Night of Excellence, Orientation Days, Sing Together Festival and the Queensland Schools’ and Colleges Music Festival, where both groups have consistently enjoyed A Section Gold Awards. In 2014, the Vocal Ensemble was privileged to be one of the guest artist ensembles at PEMULWUY, the prestigious All Male National Choral Festival, and were surprised by a standing ovation.

The unique sounds of handbells and handchimes enthral all who hear their heavenly quality. Boys particularly like the very many techniques that can be elicited from handbells. Besides the ringing technique, other techniques developed may include malleting, suspended malleting, marting, mart lifting, shaking, rotating, vibrating, swinging, shelleying, four-in-hand and processing while ringing. The ensemble has received Gold Awards (A Section) every year since 2001 in the Queensland Catholic Schools’ and Colleges’ Music Festival. The handbell ensembles are invited to perform at many prestigious events such as the 2014 World Alliance for Arts Education Summit. In 2018, the ensembles will travel to Cairns for the 18th International Handbell Symposium. Their director, Ms Barbara McGeever represented the Handbell Society of Australia (Australia and New Zealand) as one of the guest conductors at the 16th International Handbell Symposium (Jeju Island, South Korea)

Students may participate in a series of lessons, run by Gardiner Chess at the school, to promote chess and encourage skill development. Friendly games of chess can be played at lunch times, in the library, either with a chess set or on computer. Students are also encouraged to enter external competitions to test their abilities against other players of their own age. All boys are given the opportunity to compete in a chess competition against other schools.
Students are given the opportunity to compete in a debating competition against other schools. Students may then continue developing their debating skills during the rest of the year in competitions held by the Queensland Debating Union.
All students are given the opportunity to compete in a public speaking competition against other schools. The boys learn public speaking skills as part of the College’s English curriculum, and are also coached for the competition. Students also have an internal competition, from which a ‘Public Speaking Award’ is presented to the winning speaker.
Speech and Drama
Classroom drama lessons are supplemented by a voluntary speech and drama program that is conducted by an external specialist. This program develops drama, speaking and presentation skills for students to perform in productions and to improve their public speaking skills.
Theatre sports is an active fun-filled team competition based on games that develop teamwork, acting skills and creativity. The teams compete at various levels with the potential to reach the State final each year.
