A Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) education sets its graduates on a path to success in a range of endeavours. An independent, non-denominational day and boarding school for boys, BGS has been a leader in education in Australia since its foundation in 1868. The School is located on the edge of Brisbane CBD and caters to 1700 boys from Years 5 to 12, including more than 80 boarders.

Underpinned by values of endeavour, learning, respect, leadership and community, BGS educates boys by nurturing their intellectual, physical, and emotional wellbeing to become thoughtful, confident men of character who contribute to their communities.

Incredible facilities — such as the state-of-the-art Lilley Centre, Indoor Sports Centre with Olympic-size pool, gymnastics facility and basketball courts — balance beautifully with historical architecture that dates back to the School’s early days. BGS also boasts a number of exceptional off-campus facilities, including the Northgate Playing Fields, the Outdoor Education Centre at Lake Moogerah, Rowing Boatshed and Tennis Centre.

Boarding students are made to feel part of a House ‘family’ and are kept busy through a variety of programs, which include everything from academic and activities enrichment to public purpose and learning life skills.

The Lilley Centre is the school’s academic hub incorporating the senior library, an interactive forum, flexible ICT rich learning spaces, teaching laboratory and seniors’ room. Our Arts precinct serves the performing and fine arts with art studios, a theatre, practice rooms and a rehearsal gallery. In 2014, the Centenary Library for year 7 and 8 boys was opened, complete with its own film studio. Modern Lapidary and Creative Design Laboratories enhance the boys’ science and technology experiences. The arrival of year 5 students to the school has seen the construction of a new social space complete with climbing gymnasium and outdoor classroom. On-site sports facilities include ovals, cricket nets, tennis courts and a modern indoor sports centre with a heated pool, multi-purpose courts, cricket nets, weights and training room and gymnastics arena. Off-site facilities include a 20-hectare sporting ground with playing fields for football, rugby and cricket; a rowing shed on the Brisbane River; and a gold standard outdoor education centre at Moogerah.
Years 5 and 6 students undertake a core course that includes the study of the following disciplines: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Drama, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Spanish and Physical Education.

Year 7 students undertake a core course of study in English, Maths, Science, History and Physical Education. During the year students also engage in one semester’s study in each of the following: Geography, Art, Drama, Music, Design and Technology, Latin and two of the modern languages (Chinese, Japanese, French and German).

Year 8 students undertake a core course of study in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Physical Education and one of the modern languages (Chinese, Japanese, French and German). Over the year students also undertake one semester’s study in each of the
following: Art, Design and Technology, Drama and Music.

In Year 9 all students study English, Maths, Science, History and one of either Geography or Latin (entry to which is conditional). In addition, all students continue with their study of one of the modern languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese) and undertake
regular or rotational classes in Physical Education, Design and Technology, Music, Drama and Art.

In Year 10 all students study English, Maths, Science and History. Students continue from Year 9 with their study of one of Geography, Music or Latin and with their study of one of the modern languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese). Students also undertake
regular or rotational classes in Physical Education, Design and Technology, and Art.

In Years 11 and 12 all students study English and at least one Mathematics subject. Students choose a combination of a further four subjects from the Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Earth Science, Technology Studies, Physical Education), the Humanities
(Geography, Economics, Modern History, Ancient History), Languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin) and the Arts (Music, Drama, Art). Students are required to undertake a balanced course of study reflective of the School’s commitment to a liberal
education.

All GPS sports and cultural activities (chess and debating) and a range of other sports and activities including fencing, Tae Kwon-Do, drama, an extensive music program, Computer Club, Robotics Club and Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme.

Boarding has been an integral and dynamic part of the School’s landscape since it opened in 1869. Boarders are in the perfect position and have ample opportunity to access the vast array of experiences the School has to offer. As Harlin House is located at the heart of the campus, the boarders have, on their doorstep, extensive playing fields, the Indoor Sports Centre and the Music Centre, and need only walk about 50m to The Lilley Centre for prep which houses the senior library, and to which the boarders have access to during week nights.

This stimulating boarding environment is comprised of young men from rural and regional communities, provincial cities and overseas locations. A warm and nurturing community, the boys undoubtedly form strong bonds and valued friendships that continue long after school, often lasting a lifetime. Our house tutors are all graduate staff, the majority of them teachers, who focus on supporting the boys through the many personal and academic challenges that are a part of life.

Our aim is that boarding at Brisbane Grammar School will provide your son with a chance to develop both his emotional and intellectual intelligence through his interaction with a diverse range of people and experiences.

Our student wellbeing programs support and develop our students' emotional resilience and intelligence. A coordinator of student well-being oversees the implementation of these programs from Years 5 to 12. Our programs assist boys to make sense of their world and their connections to it.
