Established in 1881, Caulfield Grammar School is a leading independent co-educational school in Melbourne, Australia.

Our purpose is to offer a thriving learning environment that supports our learners to feel empowered, deeply engaged and encouraged to become people of character and contribution. With a passionate vision for innovation in education, we offer a globally-focused curriculum that prepares students with skills for life as they engage with a rigorous learning program to prepare them for whatever the future brings.

Caulfield Grammar provides a progressive and broad curriculum, established on current and emerging theories and innovative practice, from ELC to Year 12, for day students and boarding from Year 9.

We value inclusion and are a non-select entry school. Our academic outcomes stand as a testament to our teaching philosophy and learning practice. We actively seek out examples of international best-practice and innovation in education from which the school can learn as we evolve and adapt to empower our learners.

Our School operates across five campuses. Three are located in the Melbourne metropolitan areas of Wheelers Hill, Caulfield, and Malvern. Two are dedicated experiential campuses. Yarra Junction; located in rural Victoria, focused on sustainability and outdoor education, and Newton Hall Nanjing; our China campus that facilitates our Year 9 Internationalism Program.

We are authorised to implement the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) and an IB World Middle Years Programme (MYP) Candidate school.

We believe in developing a mind for life, so that learners are equipped with the mental, emotional and academic capabilities they need to follow whatever path they choose. Caulfield Grammar School’s purpose is to enable quality learning every day, in every experience, for every learner, for life. That’s as relevant for our three-year-olds in the Early Learning Centre as it is for our Year 12 students.

We are an authorised school to deliver The International Baccalaureate – (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), and a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme (MYP). At Year 7 and Year 8, the broad core-curriculum further seeks to ensure a strong foundation for success in the senior years. The Learning Journeys at Year 9 level engage learners in a holistic, experiential approach that is designed to engage with real-world learning experiences. Learners may begin their studies for the Victorian Certificate of Education in Year 10.

A distinguishing factor in our Junior Schools is that our learners have access to a learning community. Multiple educators work alongside classroom teachers, giving each learner in-class support and a high level of individual attention throughout the day.

Our extensive co-curricular experiences in Sport, Music, Dance, Theatre and Visual Arts are supported by highly-credentialled specialists, and outstanding resources and facilities. Age-appropriate programs engage all - from participation to elite level.
As one school with five campuses, Caulfield Grammar offers a broader range of learning experiences and resources than is available at most schools.

Wheelers Hill - ELC to Year 12
Malvern - ELC to Year 6
Caulfield - Years 7 to Year 12
Yarra Junction - Earth Studies and Education Outdoors Centre
Nanjing, China - Caulfield Grammar’s facility in China where Year 9 students undertake the five-week Internationalism Program
Yarra Junction Campus

This unique campus is home to our immersive Education Outdoors Program. Yarra Junction provides a natural learning environment where students are challenged to consider the effect of their actions and lifestyle on the world around them. Established in 1947, the Experiential Learning Programs are provided across various year levels from all campuses.

Nanjing Campus

Fostering responsible global citizens is a fundamental part of our school’s vision and our campus in Nanjing, China is the heart of our Internationalism Program. Each year, around 400 Year 9 students are given a unique opportunity to study abroad, immersed in overseas life and Chinese culture. Since 1998, the Nanjing Campus has encouraged a global perspective among students and has developed practical skills associated with living, learning and operating in an unfamiliar environment.

From our own purpose-built facility, students undertake a structured program of five interrelated themes: heritage, work, family, education and environment. Students are provided with opportunities to come to know Chinese students and their families through our link with Nanjing Middle School (the high school affiliated with Normal University, one of the key schools in China), and to learn about the patterns of their daily lives.

For those who elect not to spend time in Nanjing, a unit of study based in Melbourne is designed to provide opportunities to understand Australia’s global connections and patterns of cultural, economic, social and environmental activity.

Boarding

Since its foundation in 1881, Caulfield Grammar School has been a boarding school committed to providing students from rural and overseas areas with access to its innovative learning programs.
Caulfield Grammar School offers a boarding experience for Years 9 to 12 girls and boys, allowing siblings to board at the same school. We are conveniently located the closest to Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) of all Associated Public School (APS) boarding options.

Boarding Accommodation

Our boarding house has a country heart, nestled in a school that is highly regarded for offering a thriving learning environment. We support students to develop a mind for life and feel empowered, deeply engaged and encouraged to follow whatever path they choose.
The boarding house provides outstanding accommodation and facilities for students. Rooms are designed to complement the demands of the learning program with a variety of configurations from single-bed to four-bed options. All Year 12 students are accommodated in single-bed rooms. Girls and boys share recreational and dining facilities but are accommodated in separate boarding houses.

Extensive Facilities

When the structured school day ends, boarders can access the school’s extensive facilities including the library, tennis courts, swimming pool, gymnasium, basketball courts and games room.
Located just eight kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre and well serviced by public transport, students enjoy convenient access to all the attractions of Australia’s ‘most liveable city’.

Academic and Co-Curricular Programs

Boarding students gain access to one of Australia’s most innovative schools, with an emphasis on specialist teachers and coaches, and a broad range of learning programs that prepare learners to anticipate their future directions with confidence, courage and capability.
Few schools can match the range of learning experiences on offer at Caulfield Grammar School. This enables students to discover their talents and hone their skills in their chosen fields.
Caulfield Grammar School places great importance on students achieving their academic potential and in fostering a strong sense of personal responsibility. Students can choose from an extensive list of learning programs taught by specialist teachers, along with co- curricular activities such as Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, Dance, Sport, community service and various leadership programs. Teachers also offer after-hours tutoring for students in the boarding house. Boarding supervisors, the majority of whom are members of the teaching staff, provide excellent support with study, supervision and role modelling for boarders. Boarding house staff offer careful guidance in student social activities, meals and study routines.

Why choose to board at Caulfield Grammar School?

Boarders at Caulfield Grammar School’s Caulfield campus in Melbourne generally come from country Victoria and Southern New South Wales, along with a small contingent of students from other states and overseas. Students come to experience the rich and varied learning programs of Caulfield Grammar while enjoying the benefits of boarding life and all that Melbourne has to offer. Caulfield Grammar has always been a boarding school and is committed to providing a secure, supportive and caring learning environment for girls and boys living away from home.

Caulfield Grammar School’s boarding house is the closest coeducational APS boarding school to the heart of Melbourne, offering boarding for boys and girls – brothers and sisters. Boys and girls share common recreation and dining facilities but are accommodated in separate boarding houses. Students have supervised study blocks in which tutors are available. All living arrangements, including meals, social activities and study are supervised by boarding staff.

Computers are situated throughout the boarding houses and are all linked to the school’s computer network, enabling students to access the school’s online educational resources. Each bedroom within the boarding house has network access for students who wish to bring in their own computer.

While enjoying the friendly, family atmosphere of the small boarding community of around 95 boarders, students can enjoy the excellent facilities of Caulfield Campus, including: library, fully equipped  gymnasium, music school, tennis courts, indoor basketball courts, netball courts, 650 seat auditorium, performing arts studio, playing fields and a heated indoor swimming pool.

Caulfield’s location, only 8 kms from the city is well serviced by public transport.  Boarders are ideally located to access the attractions of one of the world’s most liveable cities, including shops, theatres, beaches and sporting venues.

Our pastoral care program is designed to meet the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs of students. It is a key element of our student-centred approach to education.

With a carefully selected team of boarding house staff, led by the Head of Boarding and Assistant Head of Boarding, our boarding students can be confident that there will always be someone nearby who understands and can respond to their needs.

Boarding students are a highly valued and integral part of Caulfield Grammar School. As a testament to the high level of support and care they receive, students consistently achieve strong VCE results. Their involvement in a wide range of school activities is rewarding for them and recognised as a valuable contribution to the life of the School.

Tom Feng, Year 12 Boarder 2020, China

My parents and I came to Australia in 2016. We were attracted to Melbourne because Melbourne is one of the most liveable cities in the world and it is very multicultural.

I came to Caulfield Grammar in Year 9 and found a friendly and supportive community both within the overseas students' group and within the broader community of students and staff. We have students from all over the world - overseas boarders, students whose parents migrated to Australia, and local students who are learning Chinese and German. There is no way a student here could remain invisible or be ignored because there is a strong culture of diversity, tolerance and multiculturalism.

I would also like to highlight Nanjing Campus. Caulfield Grammar has always been passionate about interacting with the other parts of the world through Nanjing and various overseas programs. There I played the role of translator between local Chinese and our students. I found it particularly enjoyable when I saw our students mixing with the local community in the park which demonstrates the School value of ‘Embracing diversity’’.

Shelly Liu, Year 12 Boarder 2020, China

My family and I arrived in Australia in 2016. I was always passionate in exploring the big world and I chose to start my new adventure in Melbourne for its humanities culture and unique lifestyle. I came to CGS by following the advice of my cousin who was a past graduate of Caulfield Grammar. He told me there was an excellent study environment and cultural diversity within the campus which made me looked forward to studying in one of the best co-educational schools in Melbourne.

My highlight is definitely the International Assembly. This assembly is not about how excellent people can be, but more about how diverse Caulfield Grammarians are. I am a terrible dancer, but my first stage experience at Caulfield was presenting K-pop in international assembly. That was the first time I didn’t really care about how bad I looked or how awkward the movements were, but I was more excited at the prospect of getting to learn something new and being part of the positive energy of dance. And more importantly, the cheering from my peers who sat in the auditorium where I found a feeling of acceptance and being valued. This experience helped me to explore more about the meaning of cultural diversity.

At Caulfield Grammar School, we offer a holistic education that provides learners with the foundation for a mind for life.

The school years are some of the most formative and important years in a young person’s life. This is the time when students can learn not just the academic skills required to build the life that’s right for them, but the emotional intelligence and cultural awareness to be able to do so with motivation, resilience and humility.

At Caulfield Grammar School, they will learn within the classroom and beyond, developing a mind that is equipped to thrive and to live their life with passion. It is my aim that every learner can feel a sense of belonging here, and enjoy an authentic experience where they can be not just their true selves, but become the best version of themselves.

With more than 3200 students and 800 well qualified and highly dedicated staff, Caulfield Grammar School is a multi-campus school, with five campuses (three in Melbourne, Yarra Junction, and Nanjing – China). The school encourages cultural diversity and internationalism and has for many years welcomed girls and boys from overseas. In fact, our first overseas student, Wilkie Lum, joined us in 1911!

The school offers a broader range of learning experiences and resources than most other schools.

The shared expertise of a large group of specialist staff, top quality facilities and the support of a large community network are clear advantages for students. By offering students a diverse curriculum based on sound educational values, Caulfield Grammar School provides many opportunities for students to broaden their horizons or pursue a line of study to the highest level.

Caulfield Grammar School has links with Melbourne’s major universities, providing students the opportunity to undertake first-year university subjects whilst still attending secondary school. Students at Caulfield Grammar School have a history of strong academic results in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) – Victoria’s internationally recognised senior school certificate – and virtually all have been offered a place in a tertiary course of their choice at Australian universities or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. Should international students decide to stay in Melbourne to complete their tertiary education, they can do so in the knowledge that the city is home to some of Australia’s, and the world’s, leading universities.

Caulfield Campus is located close to the Melbourne CBD and is the only campus offering boarding facilities, in addition to homestay accommodation options at Wheelers Hill Campus.
