Melbourne Grammar School is distinguished by an involved and vital community, with parents encouraged to participate in many aspects of School life. The importance of community is reflected in the School’s culture of philanthropy, with the legacy of past generations allowing the School to grow and advance.

Founded in 1858 by the first Bishop of Melbourne, Melbourne Grammar School is an Anglican school in the tradition of the Church of England. While we embrace a Christian philosophy, we warmly welcome families from a diverse range of religious and cultural backgrounds and actively promote tolerance and compassion. As part of providing a meaningful and holistic education, the School values the examination of religious, moral and ethical issues and encourages students to explore and share their beliefs.

Coeducation at Grimwade House (Prep to Year 6)

We believe it is important for young boys and girls to play and grow together in a warm, supportive atmosphere where they learn from one another. Our decision to provide coeducational learning for younger students stems from our belief in the importance of family. Parents of primary school students are highly involved in their children’s education and we recognise that this support and organisation is easier to provide if all young children in a family attend the same school.

The structure of Grimwade House also reflects the family environment with older and younger children exploring the world together through daily play and important events. Coeducational primary schooling provides the opportunity for children to meet and work with the opposite gender in a friendly and non-threatening way that develops their identity and understanding of the world.

Education for boys (Years 7 to Year 12)

Research has shown that boys and girls generally develop different learning styles as they move towards adolescence and we believe that, in a single-sex learning environment, we are best able to focus on the particular needs of boys as they become young men.

Our programmes are designed with a strong emphasis on leadership and defining appropriate boundaries, while our comprehensive pastoral care system enables each student to form authentic connections with a range of adult role models and mentors. There are many opportunities for boys to pursue physical activity, including exploring the outdoors, and to realise the importance of caring for others and having fun.

We are acutely aware that many boys enjoy sport and games, and our sporting and outdoor education programmes are geared toward making sure that all boys find an opportunity to play in teams or participate in sporting activities that suit their abilities. Our boys find that effective teamwork and handling the rigours of the sportsfield are essential skills that serve them equally well in the academic arena.

In a coeducational environment, many boys may be reluctant to excel in areas of the curriculum that can sometimes be stereotyped as feminine. Our students are encouraged to pursue courses of study which suit their abilities and interests. They can develop in a secure environment which values the individual and recognises that success can take many forms. In tandem with our science, technology and mathematical programmes, our classes in performing and creative arts and humanities are presented as a vital path to future success. Our debating teams, theatrical presentations, orchestras, choirs and music ensembles, camps and other activities reinforce this message.

Boarders at Melbourne Grammar School enter a caring, inclusive environment that helps each individual to thrive.

Melbourne Grammar School is centrally located in South Yarra, just minutes from the city and adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The boarding precinct centres on three graceful Victorian houses overlooking the Royal Botanic Gardens. Our boarding facilities provide modern, purpose-built student accommodation – a home away from home to 120 boys from Years 7 to 12; Creswick House for Years 7 and 8 and Perry and School Houses for boys in Years 9 to 12.

Boarding is an important part of life at Melbourne Grammar School, and the advantages of boarding are numerous. The friendships made in the boarding environment are strong and long lasting. The boarders’ proximity to the School’s facilities helps them fully appreciate all the School has to offer and Melbourne Grammar School’s location offers boarders an unrivalled quality of life.

Boarding at Melbourne Grammar School provides a warm, friendly environment where teamwork and communication are important and where resident staff and students work together to create an environment where all boys can live happily and achieve their best.
