Helping heads, hearts and souls flourish.

Shore is an independent, Anglican day and Boarding School for boys, with a co-educational Early Learning Centre (ages three and four).

Since our foundation in 1889, our Christian faith and values at Shore have always steadfastly guided our holistic approach to education and Pastoral Care.

Intelligence, courage and empathy are the bedrock of the character we strive to help build.

Our commitment is to ensure that every one of the students in our care receives a holistic education that prepares them for whatever path they may choose to follow in life.

This philosophy requires us to deliver the highest standards of teaching and learning in the classroom, the development of character through a broad range of co-curricular activities and community service, and the opportunity to explore the values of our Christian faith as they determine their own spiritual beliefs and worldview.

In these endeavours we are supported by dedicated, highly qualified teachers and staff, and an ethos that binds and inspires us.

With world-class facilities, a stunning location in the heart of Sydney close to public transport, and a wonderful and supportive school community, Shore is an excellent choice for any family seeking a stellar holistic education for their son.

A Shore education is dedicated to realising every aspect of your child’s potential – intellectual, emotional, and spiritual.

Our mission at Shore, guided by our Christian values, is to ensure that every child receives the support, guidance and instruction they need to become the very best version of themselves – a philosophy and path that will take them from the classroom to the world at large and their role in the broader community.

Throughout their life journey, young people will face many opportunities and challenges. One sure source of continuity and stability are the values and principles we teach, that will help guide prepare them for their journeys.

We do this by delivering a broad academic curriculum, supported by exceptional Co-Curricular and Pastoral Care programmes, at our Early Learning Centre and K-2 campus at Northbridge and our Preparatory and Senior School campus at North Sydney.

Shore has one of Australia’s leading High Potential Learners (HPL) programmes. We recognise that every child is unique, and we are proud to offer a specialised programme designed to support those who show significant promise. We are committed to identifying and nurturing the exceptional academic potential that lies within our students from the very beginning of their educational journey. This programme allows these young minds to flourish and reach their full potential.
The Northbridge School campus enjoys one of the finest ovals in Sydney and five other full-sized ovals, tennis courts, pavilions and dressing rooms, together with state-of-the-art school facilities. The open plan of the Early Learning Centre allows maximum flexibility for individual and group activities.

The Senior School at North Sydney, with magnificent views of the harbour and city, features a comprehensive library, basketball courts, weight training facilities and a swimming pool. The performing arts centre (including the 500-seat Smith Auditorium), Technical and Applied Studies, Visual Arts, and IT facilities cater for a comprehensive education of boys of all abilities, with an eclectic mix of tradition and innovation. There is also a well resourced rowing facility on the Parramatta River at Gladesville.

Boarders are well accommodated in airy, private and spacious dormitories (single rooms in Year 12), enjoying magnificent views of the city and harbour. With excellent bathroom and recreational facilities, dedicated and caring resident staff, an after-school learning centre and academic tutors in the Boarding Houses during ‘prep’ at night, the Boarders at Shore enjoy an environment second to none.

A holistic education requires skills and challenges outside of the classroom.

At Shore, our Co-Curricular programme is a vital component in an education that seeks to enhance our students’ development beyond academic achievement.

Academically, these activities can enhance learning by applying classroom concepts in real-world contexts. Success in these endeavours can then circle back to improved self-confidence that supports academic efforts in the classroom.

We provide a very wide range of opportunities that includes sport, music, drama, cadets, debating and various clubs, all of which help to foster a well-rounded skill set that is crucial for personal growth and future success.

These activities improve social skills by providing opportunities for teamwork, communication and leadership. Through group projects or team sports, students learn to collaborate, resolve conflicts and lead others.

Engaging in pursuits outside of the classroom helps students manage stress, build resilience and develop a positive self-image. The sense of achievement from mastering a new skill or contributing to a team can boost confidence while providing a healthy outlet for self-expression. Furthermore, these activities often spark interests and passions that might not be explored within the standard curriculum.

This exploration can lead to discovering new hobbies and career interests, giving the boys a broader perspective on their future possibilities.

Shore aims to build capacity and understanding in our boys to serve outwardly in our community, as part of our Christian ethos and aims as a school.

Our Service Learning programme inspires them to volunteer their time and efforts for the benefit of others. In doing so, they will learn and live by the core values of the service ideal – respect, humility, integrity, care and gratitude.

The programme offers a range of learning activities that extend beyond the classroom. Our younger students in Kindergarten and Prep School visit nursing homes while Senior School students participate in a range of camps and volunteer in community service initiatives. These are enriching environments in which they can develop a broad mindset that builds teamwork, empathy, compassion, inclusivity and a sense of community.

The programme is conducted by the Teachers in the younger year groups in the Prep School and the Houses and Tutor Groups in the Senior School, and create the opportunity for the students to participate in the work of non-profit organisations including, but not limited to Rough Edges, Cancer Council, the Salvation Army, World Vision and Anglicare.

Shore is home to nearly 200 boarders from across Australia and overseas. Boarding offers a unique and enriching environment — socially, academically, culturally and spiritually — providing a safe ‘home-away-from-home’ to nurture and support the growth and development of each boy.

Boarding is offered from Year 7.

Shore offers excellent pastoral care from tutors within House groups, school counsellors, chaplains, a resource department for remedial and extension work, and careers advisers. Additionally, Shore's Service Learning Programme inspires students to volunteer through learning activities extending beyond the classroom, including community engagement, camps and community service initiatives.

Shore seeks to uphold the Christian faith through the teaching of the Bible and pointing people to Jesus. Since our foundation in 1889, our Christian faith and values at Shore have always steadfastly guided our holistic approach to education and Pastoral Care.

As we continuously nurture all the students under our care to reach their full academic potential, we also actively encourage and teach them to learn and apply the virtues of good character.

Students at Shore will not only learn Christian values through our Chapel services and Christian Studies classes, they will also have many opportunities to see and experience it first-hand through our leading Pastoral Care and Service Learning programmes. These programmes are designed to teach the students — in modern, engaging and meaningful ways — the foundations of good character such as ethical behaviour, moral actions, gratitude, empathy and community service.

Many Shore Old Boys have gone on to hand on the torch of life and serve their families and communities with distinction, from volunteering and fundraising through to pastoral careers and working in the not-for-profit sector. It is our hope that the Christian faith and teachings passed down to our students today will encourage them to preserve their commitment to family and community long into their adult lives.

General Information

The School provides financial support to selected boys in the form of scholarships, bursaries and exhibitions. Scholarships are available to boys entering the School in Year 7 and in Year 11 and others are available to boys within the School.

Entrance scholarships are awarded each year to a number of boys entering Years 7 and 11 and are allocated after the completion of a competitive examination and an interview with the Headmaster and Director of Studies. In general, such scholarships are awarded to boys considered to have high academic potential, who will benefit substantially by attending the School, and who will in turn make a significant contribution to the academic life of the School. Factors other than purely academic potential may be taken into account.

Three means-related scholarships are available (one of which is for Boarding) for entry into Year 7. They are awarded to boys who apply considerable effort to their studies and who will contribute significantly to the life of the School, both inside and outside the classroom.

The Shore Foundation RAI Grant Music Scholarship provides an opportunity for a boy entering Year 7 with outstanding musical talent to attend Shore and exercise leadership in this area. Financial incentives are also offered to a number of boys undertaking instrumental tuition in Year 7.

Should a scholarship for entry to Year 7 or Year 11 be offered, acceptance will entail payment of the Registration and Enrolment Fee. These payments confirm acceptance of a scholarship. Boys who have already enrolled or who currently attend Shore Preparatory School will have paid this sum previously.

A number of exhibitions and bursaries are available to boys within the school who are progressing into Year 11 and Year 12. Such awards are made to selected applicants after consideration of their potential contributions to the School and an assessment of their likely performance in a variety of areas of School life in their final years. Occasionally, boys may be invited to share an award.

All scholarship, bursary and exhibition holders are expected to display academic progress in keeping with their abilities and to take a full and constructive part in the life of the School.

All awards are reviewed annually and are continued if the boy is considered to be making outstanding progress. Most of the awards are named after members of the School community who have made outstanding contributions to the School in a variety of ways over a long period of time.

Why Shore Does Not Offer Sporting Scholarships

The historic position of the AAGPS has been that schools ought not to offer sporting scholarships. Shore continues to endorse this stand and does not target the enrolment of gifted sportsmen, nor does it subsidise their enrolment by way of fee reduction. Shore does offer academic, music, indigenous and means tested bursary and scholarship opportunities, nearly all at the point of entry at Year 7. Why does the School make these distinctions? The reasoning is based upon three principles: the educational nature of games rather than as a means of promotion of the school; the equity issues that arise for other boys and the cost to other parents of subsidising sportsmen. A sporting scholarship is “the provision of a specific place in a school for a student of exceptional sporting ability, the place being entirely, or for the most part, decided by that student’s sporting ability. This is usually accompanied by tuition fee reductions, wholly or partially.” The fees may sometimes be paid by third parties. The critical issue is not who pays such fees, but the rationale for the place having been offered. Rather than take responsibility for developing talent a school looks to acquire it.

School sport, or to use the traditional name “games”, is primarily undertaken for educational objectives, and the prime purpose is to provide wide participation at a good level for all boys throughout the school. These objectives include the development of a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, sportsmanship in its highest forms, self-control and character. On these points it would seem to send a mixed educational message that when faced with a relative weakness, one would buy a solution rather than work towards developing one’s own talents or potential talents. At this point the amateur and educational tradition moves towards the values and strategies of professional sport. The high profile nature of inter school competitions is often used as a measure for marketing and publicity, matters which are less likely for academic and music scholars. The purpose of sporting scholarships is primarily to gain advantage in prestigious sports at first team level. The integrity of the competition at a senior level is destroyed as it becomes impossible for other schools to have any hope of success in the competition. Shore believes it has an obligation to all schools in the AAGPS to ensure that the playing field is level.

There are profound equity issues for boys and families who have supported the school financially and through their own commitment to excellence when the “sports scholar” displaces a boy. For example the boy who has played A level cricket throughout his junior years suddenly may find himself displaced from the senior squads by a new arrival, whose place in the school has been granted and paid for on the basis of sporting ability developed elsewhere. This too would send an anti-educational message about loyalty and perseverance. Academic and music scholars leave room in the “top sides” for others, and do not disadvantage them in this way.

The discount or subsidising of fees is always paid for from other sources, and therefore any significant sporting scholarship programme will drive up the cost base of the school and the fees will be subsidised by other parents.

It is for the combination of reasons outlined above that Shore maintains its historic position of not offering sporting scholarships and continues to advocate this principle within the AAGPS.

Shore is a non-selective school that stresses the importance of a holistic education – an approach that nurtures the head, heart and soul of every student entrusted to our care.

Given the breadth of our remit, it is particularly satisfying and rewarding to see the exceptionally high standard of academic results our boys continue to achieve.

Our 2024 results were the finest we have achieved in our 135-year history.

Additionally, Shore achieved:

  • 2 Duces with perfect ATARs of 99.95
  • 2 First in Course results – Drama and PDHPE
  • 7 students with an ATAR of 99.9+
  • 29 all-round achievers
  • 33% of students with an ATAR of 95 or higher
  • 10 state rankings
  • 91.83 median ATAR

This is a reflection of our philosophy to encourage and support students to pursue their individual passions and excel in all they do.

We congratulate our 2024 students on their hard work and wonderful achievements.

Shore is a great school! This is considered judgement based on over 30 years of Headship over five schools and the cross-sector experience of both Chairing the Heads’ Association and conducting systemic reviews of other leading schools. Shore is, in fact, one of the great schools of Australia.

What is distinctive about Shore is its culture of comprehensive excellence, that is, Academics, Pastoral Care, Co-Curricular and the holistic formation of wonderful young people who, because of what Shore represents, will in many cases be leaders in aspects of our national life.

Our commitment to a genuinely comprehensive education means there is an abundance of possibilities for our students as they explore the learning opportunities across all facets of School life and embrace the dynamic tradition and spirit of Shore.

Our focus — Building Good Men for Life — is inspired by the Bible’s teachings. “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (Timothy 4:12). We are reminded that, regardless of age, we are tasked to set an example for others and be true to our purpose. Shore strives to instil and strengthen character within our boys to positively influence how they think and act, especially when faced with difficult situations and decisions.

You are welcome to visit and explore all that a Shore education offers your family.
