Established by the Marist Brothers in 1881, St Joseph’s College – known as Joeys – is a Catholic secondary school for boys. Staff, students and families incorporate the Marist values in all they do, creating an environment in which boys are nurtured to become good men and to realise their potential. These values of presence, simplicity, love of work, family spirit and in the way of Mary are central to our mission as educators.

Academic & Pastoral Care
Our vision is to educate boys for life, learning and leadership for the common good, through our Catholic faith environment and an integrated program of teaching and learning, co-curricular activities and pastoral care. College staff provide each boy with the highest quality education and guidance. We work in close partnership with families to ensure your boys have every opportunity to become men of intelligence, leadership, compassion, resilience and faith.

St Joseph’s College prizes academic excellence without compromising on personal growth and development. With a vibrant array of opportunities, the College cherishes every student’s unique aspiration. Our recent graduates will inspire the next generation of Joeys boys to aim high, with the Class of 2023 attaining 209 entries on the Distinguished Achievers list, multiple students achieving ATARs above 98 and the Dux obtaining the perfect ATAR score of 99.95. This affirms St Joseph’s College as an ideal destination for aspiring high achievers and accelerated learners.

To prepare students for a world that values not only intellectual acumen but also practical skills and creativity, Joeys promotes a culture that balances academic, cultural and sporting pursuits.

St Joseph’s has a distinguished legacy of sporting excellence, nurturing numerous sportsmen who have gone on to represent at state and national levels. Much of the College’s success is attributable to the strong team spirit fostered by our tight-knit, supportive community. With strong links to local and international communities and rural Australia, our students can undertake immersions in Tanzania, Kiribati, Timor-Leste and the Kimberley region, and experience language exchanges in Japan and France. Just a few of the activities that students can participate in throughout their time at Joeys include robotics competitions, debating, reading groups, strategic games, drama productions and music ensembles and choirs, community volunteering and mentoring.

As the largest all-male boarding and day school in Australia, Joeys brings together students from diverse backgrounds and locations, who live, work, play and pray together. Day students and boarders alike benefit from the lifelong connections that the boarding environment encourages. The cherished city–country connection is one of the defining features of Joeys life.

Whether your son is gifted academically, creative at heart, a sports fanatic or a driven all-rounder, he will find his place at Joeys.

The College’s motto In Meliora Contende – striving for better things – encapsulates the core value that all Joeys boys live by. Parents entrust Joeys with not only the education of their son, but the overall development, care and welfare of his whole person. Above all, Joeys is about developing young men of character, courage and integrity.

From state-of-the-art centres for Music, Drama and Visual Arts to classrooms configured for interactive learning and sporting grounds that are world-class, facilities at St Joseph’s College provide boundless opportunities for every boy to discover and develop his skills and passions.

Most recently, the College Aquatic and Fitness Centre was completed and officially opened in 2022, and from 2023 work commenced on enhancing the Br Emilian Hall, which was built in the College’s centenary year.

At the Technology and Arts precinct students explore and develop their creative talents in spacious, flexible and dynamic learning areas. The Br Louis Music Centre has specially designed practice and rehearsal rooms and a computer lab for digital production. There is also a digital studio, a lighting studio and a dark room, with photography a popular component of the Visual Arts program and the College also hosts an artist-in-residence each year. These spaces work alongside the Farrell Auditorium and Br Michael Naughtin theatre, where art exhibitions and musical productions are held.

The Science wing is purpose-built to encourage observation, experimentation and critical thinking in many scientific disciplines. The well-equipped Br Liguori Resources Centre is integral to teaching and learning at Joeys, developing in students lifelong learning and research skills and a love of reading.

The College’s acclaimed sporting facilities include eight rugby fields, two football fields, five tennis courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and cricket nets, five turf and six artificial cricket wickets, a competition swimming pool, a 400-metre running track, weights and cardio gymnasiums and a boat shed, home to our rowing squads, located nearby on Tarban Creek.

The College Health Centre provides a professional, on-site health service for students that operates 24 hours, 7 days a week during term times.

And the College has its own beautiful, restored Chapel, where regular masses are held for students, staff and Joeys’ community.

Years 7 to 9 dormitories are located on the upper floors of the College’s historic sandstone building, where boarders have been sleeping since the 1890s. These facilities, however, are greatly enhanced compared to years gone by.

In modern, comfortable, attractive dormitories fully refurbished in 2013, with further updates in 2023, each year group has its own amenities area, and each boy has a bed, small desk and a locker in his press area, which is where he keeps his personal possessions. During down time in the dormitories, the boys can play ping-pong or pool or watch a movie in dedicated TV areas. There is plenty of space to sit, share stories and socialise, with day students and weekly and full boarders enjoying the communal areas through the extended day program.

The open, inclusive nature of the dormitory design in the junior years contributes to the formation of strong, family-like bonds between boys in the same year group. Boys are engaged and happy, supported by their friends, with a unique sense of community fostered through the structure of boarding, as well as compassionate boarding staff who live on-site or close to the College.

We use a distinctive pedagogical approach which St Marcellin Champagnat and the first Marists initiated. We share their intuition that ‘to bring children up properly we must love them, and love them all equally’. From this principle flow the particular characteristics of our style of educating

• Presence
• Simplicity
• Family Spirit
• Love of Work
• In the Way of Mary

We seek to adopt these attitudes and values in our own way of inculturating the Gospel. It is their sum and their interaction which gives our Marist style its Spirit inspired originality.
To educate boys in the spirit of St Marcellin Champagnat for life, learning and leadership for the common good.
St Joseph’s College is a Catholic school educating boys of character and soul, guiding them with the example of Jesus Christ to be capable and compassionate young men, taking their place with confidence and integrity in their families, their communities and their workplaces.

St Joseph’s College has a proud reputation as one of Australia’s leading independent Catholic schools. For more than 140 years, our College has educated boys to become confident, intelligent and compassionate young men, capable of making a valuable contribution to their world.

The College was founded by the Marist Brothers in 1881 and Catholic faith values are central to everything we do. We strive to provide boys with a quality education that draws faith, culture and life into harmony. We give boys access to exceptional learning opportunities within a caring, compassionate and highly supportive Christian environment.

The St Joseph’s College community celebrates learning, recognises achievement and rewards those who continually strive to do their best. It is important to encourage our young people along their journey of learning and growth, so they are compelled to use their talents in the service of others. We endeavour to help them develop their skills, along with a strong sense of social justice, so they will make a positive difference to their community, their nation and their world. Our Catholic faith values and our Marist spirit underpin everything we do and set us apart from other educational institutions.

A distinctive feature of the College is the strong sense of community spirit that unites students, families, Old Boys and staff.

As members of the Joeys family, we work together towards common goals and hold the spirit of St Joseph’s close to our heart. The very strong sense of belonging is strengthened by the never-ending support and encouragement that exists within the Joeys community. It is a unique experience that is humbling and a true honour.

St Joseph’s prides itself on being a comprehensive College where students of a wide range of abilities are given opportunities to achieve their full potential. We focus on providing boys with a balanced education, incorporating a range of learning, spiritual, physical and recreation experiences. Joeys is renowned for its outstanding academic, cultural and sporting achievements and links to the local and international community and rural Australia.

Today’s schools are places of fast-paced, individually tailored learning. Students use tools that were invented less than a decade ago and embrace new technologies quickly and easily. They demand instant access to information and have such advanced skills that it could be easy to forget our students are still adolescents, learning to deal with issues and problems that, today, are increasingly complex. At Joeys, we strive to provide a balance that caters for boys’ learning needs in this age of technology.

The students are at the heart of everything we do at the College. We are here to help boys – entrusted to us by their families – find genuine fulfilment, happiness and security in their lives. Our support and encouragement go far beyond the time students leave us at graduation. As a College community, we take great joy and strength from our ongoing relationship with our Old Boys and their families. To be part of the Joeys family is truly a gift for life.
