Introduction

St Brigid's Catholic College is a Catholic school in the Diocese of Broken Bay, which exists to educate and form young people in Catholic discipleship, offering them experiences of following Jesus as members of the Catholic community.

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming school community that values the close relationships between staff, parents and students.

The College motto ‘Inflaming hearts and minds in Christ’ is about our belief that St Brigid’s is a hope-filled community of learners, where all are respected, challenged and supported to be the very best person they can be. It is hoped that our students are impassioned and that their hearts and minds are set afire with the love of life and learning through the experiences that are offered to them at our College.

Learning & Teaching

St Brigid’s aims to foster a lifelong love of learning in all our students and every student is encouraged to strive to achieve their personal best as they progresses through each academic year.

Our goal is to develop students who are life-long learners with learning skills that include critical and creative thinking, problem solving, working collaboratively and working independently. To enhance this learning staff and students utilise and apply contemporary technological tools.

Inquiry Based Learning

Teaching and Learning at St Brigid’s is based on an inquiry approach and our curriculum design uses the Understanding by Design framework of Wiggins and McTighe. It is an approach to learning that is based on a process of inquiry, study, and research in which the student takes considerable responsibility for their own learning as developmentally appropriate. Increasing student engagement is likely to improve the quality of learning and reduce challenges in the classroom. When the learning is both relevant and requiring active engagement, student learning is maximised.

• Effective learning occurs when your students’ learning experiences are engaging, that is, when your students are doing rather than just listening.
• In inquiry-based learning, students take on more responsibility for identifying precisely what they need to learn and finding resources which will allow them to fill their knowledge gaps.
• Inquiry-based learning can help students to develop their research skills as self-directed learners.
• Students learn to identify and find answers to the questions that they need to ask and the resources that they need to draw upon in solving problems (often a real world problem).

"As we all know adolescence is a time of enormous physical and emotional changes, and the transition to high school can be both daunting and exciting (for students and parents). It's also a time where kids start to place more value on peer relationships and independence. As I have always been an actively involved parent I can say that this can sometimes be difficult. 

I remember from the St Brigid's information night the concept of trust between family and school. This for me has been St Brigid's exceptional quality. I can honestly say that I trust the my child is in a safe, respectful environment where individual needs are being met. 

I love that St Brigid's places huge importance on student wellbeing in addition to academic achievement. 

I am also very happy with the progressive learning environment. I believe that the students are being well prepared for the ever changing workplace environment, and a great emphasis is placed on critical thinking skills and self motivation.

At St Brigid’s Catholic College we believe in the capabilities of young people. We see our role, in partnership with parents, as nurturing our students to explore who they are and what contribution they can make to the world. We believe that each child is made unique in the image of our loving God and therefore deserves to be treated with respect and dignity as part of God’s creation.

During these precious years of development, it is important that we provide a safe and supportive environment in which they are encouraged to discover their learning passion. We want our students to discover the wonder of finding out about our world and to investigate relevant and significant issues through exposure to the rich learning tasks that teachers design using the curriculum as a platform. The staff at St Brigid’s have been selected as people who are dedicated and committed to this for your children.

It is a priority for us that your child is known as a person and learner- that their aspirations, challenges and achievements are acknowledged, and appropriate guidance and support is given to them when they require it. The Mentor Coach in our college is a key person in our students’ college life and the relationship built between teacher, student and family is a critical one for ensuring the holistic development of each child.

The college has been designed to support teaching and learning based on best practice as determined by contemporary educational research. Students have the world at their fingertips through the use of the internet and it is incumbent upon educators to ensure that students can find the information that they need from reliable sources, and can use this information responsibly. At St Brigid’s students are encouraged to be interdependent learners; to be as independent as possible but always knowing that asking for support from others and learning from mistakes leads to deep understanding.

I feel privileged to be the principal of such a dynamic learning environment and to have the honour of leading a group of dedicated professionals to provide the very best education for your children.
