Alphington Grammar School is a small school with big opportunities.

Alphington Grammar School provides a unique and idyllic learning environment. We pride ourselves on our commitment to supporting our students to strive for excellence in all that they do.

Alphington is a vibrant and progressive school community which encourages positive, engaging connections between all members. We strongly believe that at the core of everything we do are the relationships we build with each other, connecting both the head and the heart. The strong sense of community that permeates through our staff, students and families underpins the success experienced throughout the educational journey.

Our focus is on delivering a broad curriculum for our students and providing them with the appropriate skills and attributes to ensure their success. At Alphington, we are able to provide our students with opportunities that will prepare them for the changing nature of life, learning and work. We ignite within our students the passion for knowledge and the desire to learn. Our students leave with the skills they need to thrive and succeed in a world beyond school.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school soon.

At Alphington Grammar School, the student is at the heart of everything we do.

We are a co-educational, non-denominational school and have pride in our ability to help students develop into confident, critically thinking, independent, and responsible global citizens.

At Alphington Grammar, we believe that success is measured by individual achievement, and it’s important to us that all our students experience success. We ensure that our students do the best they can in all endeavours, and be the best person they can be while they do.

The cornerstone of our success at Alphington Grammar School is our ability to ignite the passion for learning in our students, to empower them to explore and embrace learning as a meaningful and transformational experience.

Our strong community spirit and student-centered philosophy means that we know our students extremely well. By extension, we know their learning needs, their personalities, who needs additional support, and who needs the challenge of extension opportunities.

The curriculum at Alphington Grammar School is designed to inspire and extend our students at all stages throughout their learning journey. It is challenging, providing breadth while encouraging depth of exploration. It is balanced, relevant and differentiated to match the needs, abilities and aspirations of our students. It supports the moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of each student and prepares students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life beyond school.
Alphington Grammar School can be found at one idyllic and scenic campus, nestled along the banks of the Darebin Creek and only 7km north east of Melbourne’s CBD.

With five hectares of land at our disposal, Alphington Grammar School provides ample room for a variety of indoor and outdoor learning spaces. Some of these include:

Innovative mixed-use gym/performing arts building
Sporting fields, tennis courts, cricket nets, a full sized soccer pitch and softball diamond all sitting alongside the banks of the beautiful Darebin Creek
Upper Primary classroom wing that incorporates technologically advanced functional breakout learning areas adjacent to classrooms
Teacher conferencing/resource centre and outdoor theatrette
Dynamic new STEM centre and Student Hub, and innovative new whole school Library.
Future Developments – Aquatic/Fitness Centre, Auditorium and Digital Technologies/Creative Industries building, synthetic soccer field and athletics track.
Learning Enhancement Opportunities

Alphington Grammar School is committed to providing learning enhancement and extensions to enable high achieving students to reach their greatest potential.

At Alphington, we offer two extended learning programs: the ASPIRE program for students in the Primary School, and the ALPHA initiative for students in Years 7 and 8. Both of these programs are designed to cater for our high-achieving students by providing them with opportunities to develop their skills and independence beyond the standard curriculum.

At Alphington Grammar School, we consider a child’s social and emotional health and wellbeing as essential to developing a growth mindset and experiencing success.

We believe students learn best in an environment where their social, emotional and physical wellbeing is nurtured. Our close-knit community is a strong feature of our School and we pride ourselves on the strong relationships that develop in our learning community.

We provide a variety of leadership opportunities within the School to allow for opportunities for our students to grow and develop leadership skills. Our House System provides the pillars of our Student Care and Support Structure, which is then supported by our Psychology Team and Exceptionality Team.

We strive to ensure our students feel confident in undertaking the challenges of a changing landscape and know where to turn to for the support they need as they navigate their school years.

As a non-denominational, values-based school, our central value of Excellence is supported by six additional values which underpin everything we do in our pursuit of our personal best.

These six core values are:
Endeavour
Respect
Responsibility
Integrity
Creativity
Diversity
At Alphington, our mission is to formulate well-rounded and world ready individuals.

The Enrichment Program complements the broad, dynamic classroom curriculum, whilst also offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in an array of character-building programs.

We encourage all students to explore the many activities on offer, in order to broaden their knowledge, learn a new skill, and get to know students from across different year levels.

In the Primary School, we know that free and unstructured play is vital, but we also know that offering further opportunities to develop new skills, relationships and interests in an ‘out of class’ setting, provides huge benefits. The program offers choice, fun and the opportunity to extend current interests or develop new passions.

Students in the Secondary School are offered activities spanning the areas of music and performing arts, dance, sport, games, debating, STEM and many more. An Enrichment Fair runs during the first week of school, providing students with the opportunity to not only learn more about the programs on offer, but to also sign up to participate.

Secondary students are expected to meet the minimum requirements for enrichment points each semester. Each student must accumulate 20 enrichment points per semester. At the end of each academic year, students will receive a Certificate of Achievement by fulfilling their 20 co-curricular points per semester. A Certificate of Excellence will be awarded to students who have obtained an excess of 40 co-curricular points per semester.

Students are expected to be engaged participants in their chosen activity. The program will offer a bespoke experience for each student and an opportunity to develop lifelong skills.

Our commitment to global education includes the Global Gateways Program, where all Years 9 and 10 students at Alphington Grammar School experience powerful personal growth, develop cross-cultural understanding, and become active global citizens.

Alphington Grammar School is committed to developing active and informed global citizens. Our compulsory Gateways Program is an opportunity for our Years 9 and 10 students to travel either internationally or interstate to broaden their cross-cultural experiences in an experiential way. Experiential learning activities give students considerable opportunity for personal development, self-directed learning, and the development of deeper problem solving skills.

We believe that internationalism and cross-cultural understanding is integral to developing informed global citizens. Global awareness, including the study of diverse cultures, histories, and languages, is integrated into our teaching and learning programs across all year levels, from ELC to Year 12.

In Years 9 and 10 we offer our Gateways Program to expand upon these foundations. The program aims to further develop a strong sense of cultural awareness and community, and a deep understanding of the contributions our students will make to a globally sustainable future.

Each year our students choose either an international or Australian cultural experience in each of their Year 9 and Year 10 academic years.

In alternating years, our students have the choices between:

  • A four week study tour of the cultures of China, Sicily and Greece, or;
  • A two week study tour of Central Australia including Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs

As well as:

  • A two week study tour of Vietnam, or;
  • A ten day study tour of the Top End, including Darwin, Kakadu and Litchfield National Park
Note: Destinations may vary based on local and international conditions.

"I was fortunate enough to call Alphington Grammar School my second home for six years. From the moment I joined the school, I felt an immediate sense of its authenticity and community. Every student is known by their teachers and peers, immersed in the life and spirit of the school, with countless resources, clubs and opportunities available. From life skills gained on Global Gateways to annual House Night Celebrations, I am most grateful for the holistic support AGS offers. I look forward to witnessing further milestones and the continued excellence and success of the students."

- Phillippa Lettas, Class of 2020

"As one door closes, another one opens.' That is how I would describe my experience at Alphington, and the many opportunities granted to me. I formed unforgettable bonds with teachers and students across all year levels, and I'll always cherish the memories that shaped me into who I am today. I hold the memory of my final year the closest to my heart. It was emblematic of what it means to be a true Grammarian; passion, excitement, persistence and unconditional support. Many students at Alphington, both current and alumni, would describe it as our home away from home."

- Lukas Houdalakis, Class of 2019

"Going to AGS was an experience I would not trade for anything. I am forever grateful to the school that transformed me from 'that shy kid' to a version of myself that I am so proud of today. This school instilled in me the morals that I uphold to this day; kindness, gratitude, friendship, and a strong work ethic, among others. My fondest memories of the School are of the people who I had the privilege of seeing every day. My last year of High School was challenging, but it was also the best year of my life. The thought of leaving made me reflect on everything Alphington had given me, and saying goodbye was one of the saddest moments I've ever experienced."

- Alexander Savvas, Class of 2019

"Throughout my nine years at Alphington, I was given many opportunities to grow both academically and personally. These opportunities allowed me to become the person I am today and provided me with many skills that will continue to assist me with my future endeavours."

- Hannah Reid, Class of 2018
