De La Salle College Malvern is a Catholic boys' secondary school in the Lasallian tradition, educating students from Years 7 to 12. Founded in 1912, the College has a proud history of educating young men of character, confidence and purpose. Located on High Street, the College's historic Tower Building is a recognised architectural landmark and a lasting symbol of the values that have guided generations of students, with distinguished alumni including author Gerald Murnane, Archbishop Anthony Ireland, Michael Barlow and Brett Deledio.

Located in Malvern, De La Salle College is an open-entry, non-selective and non-zoned school, welcoming students from across Melbourne. Guided by the College tagline, His potential, our commitment, De La Salle is committed to knowing, challenging and supporting every student to achieve personal excellence.

The College's two-campus model provides a clear and purposeful learning journey for boys from Years 7 to 12. The Kinnoull Campus supports students in Years 7 to 9 through a focused Middle School environment, while the Tiverton Campus provides senior students in Years 10 to 12 with specialised facilities, leadership opportunities, tailored pathways and a strong sense of independence.

The College is in an exciting period of renewal, with significant investment in contemporary learning spaces across both campuses. At Kinnoull, the renovated Harvey Building supports the Year 9 WISE Program, providing modern classrooms, flexible breakout spaces and specialist areas for applied learning, STEM, Science, Digital Technologies and Food Technology. At Tiverton, upgraded landscaping, outdoor spaces and senior facilities are enhancing the learning, wellbeing and development of senior students.

De La Salle College offers a broad and engaging curriculum, with strong academic foundations and a commitment to contemporary learning. Students are supported to pursue pathways that reflect their interests, strengths and ambitions, including VCE, VCE Vocational Major and VET. This approach ensures students are prepared for university, further education, apprenticeships, employment and life beyond school.

Wellbeing is embedded throughout the student experience. The College's GROW program, Growing Responsibility for my Own Wellbeing, provides a sequenced wellbeing curriculum from Years 7 to 12, supporting boys to develop resilience, emotional literacy, positive relationships and help-seeking skills. Strong pastoral care, House connections and mentoring ensure students are known and supported throughout their journey.

Co-curricular opportunities are an important part of life at De La Salle. Students can participate in sport, music, drama, social justice, leadership and community initiatives. The College has a proud sporting tradition through the Associated Catholic Colleges competition, as well as a growing High Performance Sport Program across AFL, soccer, basketball, cricket and swimming. Music and the performing arts are also strongly supported, with all Year 7 and 8 students learning an instrument as part of the College's music program.

As a Lasallian school, De La Salle College places strong emphasis on Faith, Quality Education, Respect, Inclusivity and Social Justice. Students are encouraged to live these values through everyday actions, leadership and service to others. The College's connection to the global Lasallian network provides students with a strong sense of identity, belonging and responsibility. The bond forged at De La Salle extends far beyond graduation, with the Old Collegians network keeping past students connected to a lifelong community built on faith, service and shared purpose.

Families are invited to discover De La Salle College through a College Tour and learn more about the opportunities available for their son.

At De La Salle College Malvern, the experience of school extends well beyond the classroom. As a non-selective and non-zoned school, De La Salle welcomes a diverse, mixed-ability cohort from across Melbourne. At De La Salle, it does not matter where a student starts. What matters is that he is encouraged to grow, supported to thrive and given the pathways to pursue his own version of excellence.

Leadership opportunities are embedded across all year levels, from Year 7 class captains and the Lasallian Youth Leaders program through to the Year 12 student leadership team, ensuring every student has the opportunity to lead, serve and contribute. Our Catholic boys' school culture fosters a positive understanding of masculinity, where boys are encouraged to act with integrity, empathy and purpose.

Through social justice initiatives, overseas immersions, sporting tours to Ireland, the United States and Spain, and drama collaborations with neighbouring schools, students are constantly challenged to grow beyond their comfort zone and make a meaningful contribution to the world around them.

Wellbeing at De La Salle College Malvern is embedded into the everyday experience of every student. The College's GROW program, Growing Responsibility for my Own Wellbeing, delivers a progressive Years 7 to 12 wellbeing curriculum covering emotional literacy, stress management, positive coping, identity, respectful relationships and help-seeking. Through this program, boys develop the skills and confidence to navigate each stage of their personal and social development. From dedicated class mentors who guide Year 7 students through their transition, to the peer mentorship culture where older students support younger peers through the Lasallian Youth Leaders program, every boy is known, supported and cared for.

In partnership with organisations including The Black Dog Institute and The Man Cave, students explore topics such as emotional literacy, positive relationships and help-seeking. A professional team of College psychologists and a fully equipped Health Centre provide additional care when needed. At De La Salle, pastoral care is not a program that sits alongside education: it is woven into the way we care for every young man in our community.

De La Salle College is guided by the Lasallian tradition and the values of Faith, Quality Education, Respect, Inclusivity and Social Justice.

These values shape the daily life of the College and are reflected in the way students learn, lead, serve and care for one another. Our community fosters a positive understanding of masculinity, where boys are encouraged to lead with integrity and act with empathy. As part of an international Lasallian network, De La Salle College encourages students to see themselves as young men with the capacity to make a positive difference in the world.

The College is committed to forming students who are confident learners, compassionate leaders and young men of character. Through social justice initiatives, overseas immersions and a lived commitment to compassion, our students develop the character, confidence and sense of responsibility to make a meaningful contribution to the world around them.

At De La Salle College, gifted and talented students are known, challenged and supported to reach their potential. We recognise that ability can be demonstrated in many ways, including academic achievement, creativity, problem-solving, leadership, performance, innovation and practical skill.

Student needs are identified through a range of evidence, which may include academic results, teacher observation, assessment data, student interests and demonstrated strengths. This allows the College to provide targeted opportunities that support each student’s learning, growth and development.

This system will allow for assessment of multiple forms of abilities (e.g. intellectual, creative, etc.). This allows the development of talents in specific domains while pursuing mainstream curricula in other subjects. The opportunities that may be offered include:

  • Differentiated content, processes and/or tasks to challenge gifted and talented students
  • Annual Progression Reports for individual students
  • STEM-based electives offering hands-on learning such as Robotics and Computer Programming
  • Mentorship opportunities via the CSIRO Scientists in Schools Program
  • Subject acceleration across specific key learning areas in Year 9, 10 and 11
  • Pathways that lead to the completion of 1st-year university subjects as a VCE subject in Year 12
  • Diverse co-curricular options that provide further avenues for gifted and talented students to be challenged through music, drama, art, debating, immersion programs, lunch clubs, as well as sport.

As well as preparation for external competitions such as:

  • Big Science Competition
  • Robocup Junior Competition
  • Australian History and Geography Competition
  • Da Vinci Decathlon

And external support programs such as:

  • The Victorian Association for Gifted and Talented Children Activities
  • CSIRO Student Research Scheme

Through this program, De La Salle College aims to enable exceptionally able students in a community of faith and excellence to achieve their full potential with integrity and distinction.

EDUCATION SUPPORT

De La Salle College is committed to supporting students with a diverse range of learning needs. Across all year levels, our Education Support Team works closely with teachers, students and families to help students access the curriculum, build confidence and experience success in their learning.

To determine the most suitable support, Education Support staff may complete internal assessments or recommend referrals to external specialists where appropriate.

SPECIAL LEARNING PROGRAMS

Targeted literacy and numeracy support is available for students in Years 7 to 9. These programs are designed to strengthen foundational skills, build confidence and support students to engage more fully with their learning.

In Years 10 to 12, students are supported to select subjects and pathways that reflect their abilities, interests and future goals. This personalised approach ensures students can pursue a senior program that supports their strengths, aspirations and individual learning needs.

Aaron May

College Dux, Class of 2020

Congratulations to 2020 De La Salle College Dux, Aaron May, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.25.

He achieved the following Study Scores; Chemistry 45, English 40, Specialist Maths 40, Mathematical Methods 43 and Physics 48. Aaron also completed Unit 3 & 4 Systems Engineering in 2019, with a Study Score of 44.

Aaron actively participated in College life and was elected College Vice Captain in Year 12, St Leo’s House Year 11 Leader and Senior Table Tennis Captain. He led by example and showed students that it was possible to balance high academic standards with strong involvement in extracurricular College activities, whether they be leadership or ACC sports commitments. He was part of various school sports teams including football, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, tennis and cross country. Aaron also had roles in the ACC Model UN Conference and the Lasallian Leadership Seminar.

“These diverse school activities have not only helped me grow as a person but have also allowed me to maximise the enjoyment out of my schooling life”.

Outside of school, sport continued to be a passion of Aaron’s. He played on several local sports clubs, captained various football sides and umpired his local junior football club.

“Being a part of a team is something that I enjoy doing as it gives me much satisfaction to see the whole team work together to achieve something bigger than any individual could achieve on their own”.

Whilst at school, Aaron belonged to the Ringwood East Australian Air Force Cadets Squadron (408 Squadron) where he was a leading cadet. As a cadet, Aaron was chosen to take part in a flying training program with 10 -15 hours of Australian Defence Force sponsored flying for 20 cadets throughout Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

In Year 10, Aaron received the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award. These awards recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both their school and the broader local community.

This year, he commenced a Bachelor of Technology (Aeronautical Engineering) at the Australian Defence Force Academy RAAF program. Aaron is hoping to become a pilot in the RAAF after completing his studies at the ADFA.

“I have just completed the initial familiarisation training stage and have begun my university studies. I am aiming to have a long career in the ADF where I can help to defend our country.”

Aaron embodies the Lasallian spirit and his values including respect for others, leadership, teamwork and mateship are evident in all he does.

De La Salle College congratulates Aaron and the graduating Class of 2020. We look forward to seeing what this exceptional class will achieve in the future.

At De La Salle College, we are proud to educate young men in the Lasallian tradition, forming students of character, confidence and purpose.

As a Catholic boys’ school, our mission is grounded in Quality Education, Faith, Respect, Inclusivity and Social Justice. These values shape the way we teach, lead, serve and care for one another. They are visible in our classrooms, our relationships, our commitment to wellbeing, and in the way our students are encouraged to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

A De La Salle education is about knowing each student, challenging him to grow, and supporting him to achieve personal excellence. We want every young man to discover his strengths, develop confidence in his abilities and understand the responsibility he has to use his gifts in service of others.

Our teachers know and understand boys. They create learning environments that are engaging, respectful and purposeful, where students are encouraged to think deeply, strive for excellence and develop the skills needed for life beyond school. Alongside this, our student wellbeing program provides the support, guidance and structure boys need as they move through each stage of their secondary journey.

De La Salle College is also entering an exciting period of renewal. Our two-campus model, contemporary facilities, tailored pathways and significant investment in learning spaces reflect our commitment to providing an environment where students can grow academically, socially and personally.

We are a community built on strong relationships, faith, service and a shared belief in the potential of every student. I warmly invite families to discover De La Salle College and the many opportunities available for their son.
