SYNOPSYS:
Our story begins as the Narrator starts to share the story of Joseph, a young dreamer, the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis.
Joseph was born into a family of twelve boys, all the sons of Jacob. Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son and so he gives Joseph a splendid multi-colored coat which angers his brothers. Joseph also has dreams about his brothers bowing down and serving him and tells these dreams to his brothers, further enraging them. They decide to kill him, but before they get the chance, they see a group of Ishmaelites traveling to Egypt. A plan is hatched, and they sell their brother as a slave instead.
So Joseph is enslaved in Egypt, and his brothers tell Jacob that his favourite son has been killed in an encounter with a goat, producing his coat as proof.
Meanwhile in Egypt, a rich and important man named Potiphar buys Joseph and puts him to work in his household. Joseph proves to be so hard-working that Potiphar promotes him to head of his household. Potiphar’s wife also takes a liking to him and tries to seduce him. When Joseph rejects her, she accuses him of inappropriate behavior and Potiphar throws him in prison.
In prison Joseph meets Pharaoh’s former butler and baker, who have both had strange dreams. Joseph interprets their dreams and his predictions come true. The butler returns to his job with Pharaoh and forgets Joseph but when Pharaoh has some strange dreams, the butler remembers Joseph and has him brought to the palace to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams.
Joseph explains Pharaoh’s dreams, explaining that Egypt will experience 7 years of plenty followed by 7 years of famine. Pharaoh is so impressed that he makes Joseph his chief minister and Joseph sets about planning for times of feast and famine.
When the famine does come, Joseph has plenty of food stockpiled in Egypt. Joseph’s family in Canaan are ill-prepared for the hard times and travel to Egypt in search of food. When they approach Pharaoh’s advisors to buy food, they do not recognise Joseph but he realises who they are. He tests their characters by planting a golden cup in the sack of his youngest brother Benjamin and accuses him of theft.
The brothers defend Benjamin and offer themselves in his stead. Joseph realises that they have changed and reveals his identity to them. The brothers bring their delighted father, Jacob, to Egypt and the family is finally, and happily, reunited.
