At St Bernard's College, we are proud to be a leading Catholic Secondary school for boys, providing a wide range of curricular and extracurricular programs to over 1600 young men from Year 7 through to Year 12. As an Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) school, we draw our identity and culture from a rich Catholic tradition that is informed by the Charism of Edmund Rice and inspired by our patron, St Bernard of Clairvaux.

Our highly talented and committed staff are experts in the education of young men, seeking to nurture each individual's God-given talents so that each one can become a confident, responsible, faith-filled man. Using the four touchstones, the College offers a liberating education, based on gospel spirituality, within an inclusive community committed to justice and solidarity.

We pride ourselves on offering an innovative, empowering, holistic and just educational experience that equips our young men academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually to make a tangible difference in the communities from which they are drawn, as well as at the state, national and international level.

Able & Ambitious

Able & Ambitious is a parallel program catering to students who would benefit from a level of extension in their studies above and beyond what is achievable in a mainstream classroom. It comprises a 'core class' in Years 7, 8 & 9 in which students can engage in elective classes with the mainstream cohort. Within this core class, students explore curriculum content at an accelerated pace, giving scope for increasing the breadth of content covered. Alternative assessment practices allow for a deeper exploration of mainstream content where creativity and academic risk-taking are held in equal esteem.

Sport Academies

Emerging Athlete Academy - Delivered in partnership with Phillips Coaching, The Emerging Athlete Academy offers Year 7 & 8 students a structured pathway that integrates academic learning with high-performance sports development.

Essendon Football Club Academy - We have worked closely with the Essendon Bombers to design this unique program for students in Years 11 and 12 who are passionate about football and wish to integrate their academic studies with elite sports training.

Tennis Academy - The College have joined forces with iTennis Coaching to introduce our very own Tennis Academy, designed to nurture budding talent and ignite a lasting love for the game.

Golf Academy - Under the leadership of golf teacher Greg McConnell, students passionate about golf can refine their skills and elevate their game. Partnering with the esteemed Northern Golf Club, we offer students a tailored training program guided by golfing experts.

St Bernard’s College is a leading Catholic Secondary school for boys founded by the Christian Brothers in 1940. Now part of the broader family of Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) schools we draw our identity and culture from a rich Catholic tradition informed by the Charism of Edmund Rice and inspired by our patron, St Bernard of Clairvaux.

As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, we aim to educate young men in the spirit of the Gospel and traditions of the Catholic Church, seeking to nurture each individual’s God-given talents, so that each one can become confident, responsible, faith filled men for others. Using the four touchstones St Bernard’s College offers a liberating education, based on gospel spirituality, within an inclusive community committed to justice and solidarity.

At St Bernard’s we offer an innovative, empowering, holistic and just educational experience that aims to equip our young men academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually to make a tangible difference in the communities from which they are drawn, but also at the state, national and international level. Our challenge then, is to bring the best of the world to Essendon and the best of Essendon to the world.

Our highly talented and committed staff are experts in the education of young men. They seek to connect with each boy through the style of education we offer. Our motto: "Discere et Agere"—"to learn and to do" comes alive every day in the teaching of our staff, the atmosphere of activity and engagement of our young men and the excellent outcomes they achieve so that each person can become the best version of themselves as they follow their distinct educational pathway.

A great feature of our College is the strength of our supportive and active community. Our pastoral structures seek to extend and nurture the young men of St Bernard’s as a three-way partnership between the students, parents and staff; we are committed to working together for the good of each young person in our care.

There is a tangible sense that we are, at our core, a caring community where you are known and valued, where we look out for our neighbour, our colleagues and our communities both locally and overseas.

We are part of the broader family of the Catholic church, we are part of the family of EREA, and we are part of the parishes from which we are drawn. Each aspect colours and enriches our identity and makes St Bernard’s a unique community to which I am proud and privileged to belong.

I do hope that you enjoy exploring our school page and by doing so, you too will get a sense of our community.
