AFL Academy

The Mater Dei College Hawks AFL Academy provides a unique opportunity for male and female students to pursue excellence in Australian Rules Football and embark on a journey of personal growth and development.

The specialist program, established in 2018, gives talented Year 7 to 12 students the opportunity to further develop their footballing ability through skill development, gameplay strategies and tactics and theoretical understanding.

The Academy follows the structure of a Specialised Physical Education (SPE) class, made up of practical and theoretical lessons. In addition, students are encouraged to learn about the other supporting roles in the game. Students can partake in umpiring and coaching courses, including gaining Western Australia Football Commission Level 1 Umpiring Accreditation and learning Exercise and Sport Science principles such as strength and conditioning, recovery, nutrition and Sport Psychology.

Future Pathways

  • Western Australia State Academy
  • WAFL/WAFLW Futures selection
  • WAFL/WAFLW Colts selection
  • AFL/AFLW

Coaching Staff and Partnerships

The Academy is committed to providing players with the highest standard of coaching and teaching. We currently have a Director of AFL, an AFLW Specialist and an AFL Specialist in the Academy. All football staff involved in the Academy have accredited AFL coaches with combined experience playing at an elite level.

Selection Criteria

The Hawks AFL Academy caters for full-time students enrolled at Mater Dei College.

Selection is based on three sets of criteria:

  • Academic performance
  • Attendance and behaviour
  • Physical skills and fitness (assessed during trials conducted at the College).

A positive attitude towards all aspects of school life will be an important part of selection into the Academy and reports are required from the student’s current school.

Application Process

The College welcomes applications for the Hawks AFL Academy from current and prospective students.

Current Mater Dei College students can apply by lodging an Application for Entry into the Hawks AFL Academy and then participating in a trial.

For prospective students, lodging a Hawks AFL Academy application will only be considered in conjunction with an application for enrolment and subsequent acceptance into Mater Dei College. The College enrolment process is conducted in the year the applying student is in Year 5. In Year 6, students who have successfully enrolled at the College and have lodged an application to play for the Hawks AFL Academy will be contacted and invited to a trial for entry into the Academy.

At the trial, students will have their physical skills and fitness tested. The College will hold a trial for acceptance into the Academy for 2024 in Term 3, 2023.

Following the trial, the College will send correspondence to advise if the student was successful.

Successful applicants will be required to sign an Academy contract committing to the following expectations:

  • Maintain an excellent attendance and behaviour record
  • Display a positive attitude towards the College ethos
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards their academic studies
  • Participate consistently and to the best of their ability throughout their involvement in the program
  • Participate in College sporting activities other than AFL and consistently in College co-curricular activities.

MaterDeiBASKETBALL

Basketball Academy

The Mater Dei Basketball Academy is an elite specialist program that provides a unique opportunity for male and female students to pursue excellence in Basketball and embark on a development journey of personal growth and development.

Designed for the current basketball player wanting to take their game to the next level, the Basketball Academy gives talented Year 7 to 11 students the opportunity to further develop their basketball ability through player development, game tactics, strength and conditioning by exploring a basketball pathway.

Structure of the Program

The Academy follows the structure of a Specialised Physical Education (SPE) class, made up of practical and theoretical lessons. This structure reflects the commitment of the College towards the basketball development of all players/students within the MDC Academy.

Throughout the year, students will also have the opportunity to hear from keynote guest speakers who are current or past players and coaches of the game of basketball and their experiences.

In addition to student basketball development, students will be led through umpiring and coaching principles to encourage involvement in other roles of our game and supporting the growth of basketball.

Students are provided with a holistic basketball education; players of the Academy will also have the opportunity to achieve a Community Beginner Level 0 Umpiring and Community Coach Accreditation, recognised by Basketball Western Australia. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about Exercise and Sport Science principles such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Injury Prevention, Goal Setting and player analysis that prepare students for senior school Physical Education Studies.

Students in the program will have the opportunity to play in ACC and SSWA tournaments throughout the year, as well as competing in the weekly CAS season. Mater Dei College has competitions against schools such as Scotch College, Willetton Senior High School and other leading basketball specialised schools.

Students will develop individual skills, knowledge and understanding of the game with a strong focus on teamwork, consistency and hard work.

I look forward to assisting you in the most important decision you will ever make as a family, the education of your child.

It is an honour and a privilege to be the Principal of this wonderful College and I look forward to sharing our story and the achievements of our community with you.

Mater Dei College offers a rich program in the Marian tradition of Catholic Education based on the pillars of Faith, Community, Service and Learning. These pillars are the foundation of the College as we strive for a culture of personal excellence based upon high expectations.

As Principal, my focus is across four broad areas:

  • Enhancing Community Engagement

The spirit of community and goodwill is strong at Mater Dei College. Positive relationships are key to a successful school and creating an environment where all members of our community feel safe to develop is incredibly important.

  • Driving the Academic Endeavour

Our College environment enables students and staff to always be on a journey of exceptional learning and teaching. My vision is that all students and staff strive to achieve personal excellence, not achieved through academic results alone, but rather through the culture within the school and the community and relationships that support it.

  • Providing Strong Pastoral Care

Mater Dei College prides itself on its pastoral care, specifically nurturing each individual and providing a complete educational experience for all students. Our teachers are committed to your child’s journey and focus on encouraging and affirming them so they can achieve their goals.

  • Diverse Learning and Co-curricular Opportunities

There is something for everyone at Mater Dei as we offer a broad selection of programs in all areas, such as Academic, Sports, Dance, Drama, Music, Creative and Design Technologies.
