NEWINGTON COLLEGE - Senior School Open Day Fri Nov 22 @ 9:00AM - 10:30AM [0 Days to go] |
Newington is an internationally respected school with a strong academic program, outstanding pastoral care, a wealth of opportunities for its students and vibrant staff, parent and alumni communities. We are both proud and fortunate.
At the same time the world is moving fast. The future of work, truth, learning, mental health, relationships, democracy, the planet – even humanity itself – are all up for grabs. This is the future our students are entering into. We have to stare this future in the eye and ask: ‘What is needed for our students to thrive in this new world?’ We owe it to them to set them up for the 2050s, not the 1990s.
We aim the develop in our students courage, integrity and kindness, an understanding of the importance of curiousity, rigour, open-mindedness, faith and meaning, and the capacity to engage in ethical and critical thinking, teamwork, and the ability to express themselves creatively and physically.
Our vision is to empower students to develop great hearts, inspired minds and strong wings, ready to make a positive contribution to society and the future.
Newington College educates students from pre-Kindy to Year 12 across its four campuses - the senior campus (7-12) in Stanmore in Sydney's thriving inner west; Wyvern House Prep (K-6) and the Newington College Early Learning Centre (for boys and girls aged 3, 4 and 5), both in Stanmore, and Lindfield Prep (K-6).
Newington offers a range of learning pathways across its campuses:
Our aim is to develop learners with independence, inquiry, and a global approach to learning. These characteristics are key to Newington’s tradition of diversity and student-centred learning.
The College’s co-curricular program comprises a large part of what distinguishes a school such as Newington. These activities encompass students’ physical, cultural, spiritual and mental development, offering a truly diverse co-curricular program that allows each and everyone to follow their own passions. With the guidance of trained coaches and professionals they can participate in all the competitive AAGPS Sports, Art, Cadets, Chess, CineArts, Debating, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Numerous Music Ensembles, and Student Exchanges.
Boarding has been at the heart of Newington College since the beginning. Newington boarders benefit from their 24 hour access to all of the College’s state-of-the-art facilities, and the extra support of the boarding family.
A central Sydney location means that boarders are able to get the best of both worlds – all the benefits of a firm boarding environment but with simultaneous exposure to the bustling community that exists beyond Newington’s gates. The small size of our boarding house ensures that with only 50 boarders, the community is more like that of a big and diverse family, with regular excursions and day-trips easily organised to develop close friendships outside the College environment.
The residents of Edmund Webb Boarding House are representative of the diversity of the Newington community and we are fortunate to have a balance of country, overseas and metropolitan boarders. Four staff members and their families are spread throughout the Boarding House, to ensure a high level of care and supervision for boarders. We also strive to create a home-like environment, where boarders are safe, respected, supported and cared for.
The wellbeing program at Newington works in partnership with parents, teachers and mentors and aims to students people of promise into young people who possess good character traits and habits. We want our students to be resilient, able to cope with disappointment, show care for others and be empathetic. We want them to contribute to their community and to have a good working knowledge of the risks of the 21st Century. Mental health and wellbeing issues have become a focal point of the program and we aim to help students create a higher level of mental fitness with mental strength, mental flexibility and mental endurance. At each year level the wellbeing program aims to address specific issues of wellbeing to prepare them for the adversity, challenges and threats they may face in their lives. They are also reminded to enjoy good times and to hunt the good things in their lives. Mental fitness is a systematic approach of working through the various thoughts that affect feelings and wellbeing.

2022
We see hundreds of students every day at Newington – peering through microscopes, scoring the winning try, playing that sublime note on a violin. We know them and care about every one of them.
I know as many of our students as I can (and I teach a different class almost every day). Their teachers care for them, their Heads of House look out for them and their mentors nourish them as whole, vibrant, people. Students know, care for and accept each other too. We may be lucky to have beautiful buildings and state-of-the-art facilities, but Newington’s spirit of support and guidance would still be immediately recognisable if we were a collection of log cabins down the back of a track.
Because we care for our students, we are ambitious for them. We want every day to be engaging and enriching and full of academic curiosity. We want them to be ready for the rapidly changing future though a focus on critical thinking, creativity, ethics and collaboration. We are ambitious about their entry into a university, course or career of their choosing. We are also ambitious for them to be excellent employers, employees, friends, husbands and sons.
We want them to discover what’s possible by sampling the many things we have to offer here and also by zeroing in on something that allows them to thrive. We want them to find their passion, their principles and their purpose here within these walls. We want them to have a good time too – after all, it is up to 15 years of their lives that they don’t get back.
All in all, we want you to be proud of the individuals of substance and resilience that they become.
We are proud of our College here at Newington, and at the same time we are grateful that several thousand parents in Sydney and beyond have entrusted the education of their children to us. It is a big responsibility and we take it seriously with every new student who joins us.
