The use of technology forms a significant part of the delivery of the educational programs at the College. In addition, there are many co-curricular opportunities such as dance, creative art, music and sport to ensure the school experience is both challenging and rich.
St Edmund's College is part of Edmund Rice Special Education Services (ERSES) which includes St Gabriel's, a leading Catholic Special Education K-12 School in Castle Hill, Sydney.
To enrich the hearts and minds of young people with special needs for active participation in their community.
Through quality Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition, we transform the whole person through authentic relationships and innovative educational experiences.
St Edmund’s College is a specialist educational facility catering for students with a range of disabilities. We are inspired by the very strong belief that the young people we serve have a fundamental right to a quality education that is meaningful, purposeful and hope-filled. At St Edmund’s College, we believe that all young people have great potential and an enormous amount to offer the world and our work as an educational community is to support students to achieve this.
Students at the College follow a course of study to the Higher School Certificate (HSC) level that consists of a combination of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) developed and endorsed courses (Life Skills) as well as school-developed non-NESA endorsed courses. As a special school, it is our goal to ensure that the program of instruction caters for the needs of the student and is focussed on building upon the foundations of primary education and developing skills to give students independence post-school.
Lessons are delivered across a fortnightly timetable of seven lessons per day, each lesson having a duration of 45 minutes. There are two classes in each year level. The homeroom teacher is the first point of contact for the pastoral care of each student, and coordinates the student’s Personalised Planning process.
Students are acknowledged for their gifts and talents and consequently they are highly motivated to achieve. Success underpins school life at St Edmund's.
The Curriculum model at the College has been designed to meet the specific needs of its students. The College uses the ‘Liberate’ approach as a whole-school framework to ensure this. Liberate is a model that recognises and applies the most prominent components of contemporary education. The model is based on blended learning, which is a combination of both teacher instruction and online learning and student wellbeing. Liberate challenges teachers to examine their normal teaching practice through a series of lenses - resilience, social capital, quality teaching and healthy and safe environments. Staff at the College engage in a comprehensive process of analysis and program development to produce the College’s curriculum programs in such a way that they meet the needs of the student, maintain the integrity of each of the Key Learning Areas, and allow for opportunities to generalise skills across a variety of settings.
At St Edmund’s the results of this model have included:
Student engagement increases with the higher level of relationship with the teacher and they gain a sense of independence working on Haiku, the College’s online learning platform. Liberate lessons are planned to incorporate Blooms Taxonomy and move students to higher order thinking tasks. Teachers have high expectations of their students and allow for creativity in their lesson outcomes.
